John Paul II
His Holiness, Pope John Paul II has taken a turn for the worse today healthwise.
What I've been wondering recently is how His Holiness will be remembered.
I was only four years old when John Paul II was selected, so he is the only pope I've ever known. Therefore, I have no one else to compare him to.
I think he was a centrist pontiff. He was instrumental in the end of Communism, particularly in his home country of Poland, and the downfall of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile. He also opened up a dialogue with the leaders of the Byzantine Catholic Church, which was founded by the Christians who stayed in the Holy Land rather than fleeing to Rome.
However, I believe that he did not adequately represent all of the members of the Roman Catholic Church (including myself) when it came to the issues of gay rights, abortion, birth control, and the role of women in the Church.
